Raw Diet Basics Explained

BARF stands for Biologically Appropriate Raw Food. Adult dogs at maintenance eat roughly 2–3% of their body weight in raw food daily.

Standard BARF ratio: 70% muscle meat, 10% raw edible bone, 10% organ (half liver), 5% vegetables, 5% seeds/oils.

⚠️ Safety Note

Raw diets require careful sourcing and hygiene. Consult a vet nutritionist before starting. Not recommended for immunocompromised dogs.

Raw Diet FAQs

The BARF method recommends 2–3% of body weight daily. A 50 lb adult dog needs 1–1.5 lbs per day. Puppies eat 5–10% of current body weight.
70% muscle meat, 10% raw bone, 10% organ (5% liver + 5% other), 5% veggies, 5% seeds/oils. Balance over a week is fine — not every single meal.
Transition over 2–4 weeks: 75/25 → 50/50 → 25/75 → 100% raw. Start with a single protein. Loose stools for 1–2 weeks are normal.
